Throughout December, the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors hosts great exhibits and these special events:

Wednesday, December 2, 12 pm, “Ladies of the Canyons: Remarkable Women of the Southwest”

Lesley Poling-Kempes gives a Brainpower & Brownbags Lecture on her newest book, Ladies of the Canyons: A League of Extraordinary Women and Their Adventures in the American Southwest (University of Arizona Press, 2015). She is also the author of Bone Horses, Ghost Ranch, and The Harvey Girls: Women Who Opened the West. Enter for free through the museum’s Washington Avenue doors.

Friday, December 4, 5:30 pm, “Treasures from a Trunk: The Costumes of Los Pastores”

Get a peek at the Christmas-themed costumes and props that the museum found inside an early 20th-century steamer trunk. Hear a casual presentation on how these ca. 1915 outfits, including a horned devil, boy angel and hermit, reveal past performances of a traditional Nativity play, Los Pastores (“The Shepherds”; also called Las Pastorelas). Bolstered by images in the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives, they tell a story of how New Mexicans re-enacted this Medieval-tinged play in days gone by. A Free First Friday Evening event. Free admission 5–8 pm.

Sunday, December 6, 1:30–4 pm, Wool and Weaving Day

In collaboration with the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center, we offer the premiere of a new documentary, along with a chance to see finished textiles and try your hand at weaving. See the 20-minute film, An Unbroken Thread: Wool & Weaving in Northern New Mexico, at 1:30 and 2:30 pm in the museum auditorium, with demonstrations throughout the afternoon. For more information, click here. Free with admission. Sundays free to NM residents; children 16 and under free daily.

Wednesday, December 9, 9 am, CreativeMornings with Ed Fenimore

Join Los Alamos astrophysicist Ed Fenimore as he delivers his far-out take on the theme of “time” at this month’s CreativeMornings event. Network with other creative professionals and enjoy pastries and coffee from the Santa Fe Baking Co.

Friday, December 11, 5:30–8 pm, Christmas at the Palace

Santa Fe’s beloved Christmas at the Palace brings the community together for an evening of hot cider, cookies, live music, piñatas, craft-making activities, a chance to operate an antique printing press, and the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Claus–all in the legendary magic of the Palace of the Governors and its courtyard. (Dress warmly!) Performers include Schola Cantorum, the Santa Fe Talent Education Suzuki Strings, High Desert Harps, the New Mexico School for the Arts, and Coro de Agua Fria. A free family event. (Donations of non-perishable food welcome.)

Saturday–Sunday, December 12–13, 9 am–3pm, Young Native Artists Winter Show & Sale

Begin collecting art, jewelry, pottery and more from the next generation of Native American artists and craftspeople. Children and grandchildren of artists associated with the Palace of the Governors’ Portal Program will demonstrate and sell their own arts and crafts in the Meem Community Room. Free.

Sunday, December 13, 5:30–7 pm, Las Posadas

The annual candle-lit procession of Las Posadas travels around the Santa Fe Plaza and concludes in the Palace Courtyard. This version of an old Hispanic tradition recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to give birth to the Baby Jesus—and throws in a few devils for good measure. Stay for carols in the courtyard, along with cookies and hot cider. Free.

Friday, December 25, closed for Christmas

We extend warm holiday greetings to everyone and look forward to seeing you when we reopen at 10 am on Saturday, December 26.
